Today we live in a world where everything is within the reach of our fingertips. With a simple tap, swipe or scan, consumers drive an on–demand economy with the latest “must-have” products, swiftest delivery services, and “true” love experiences. “Autonomic” re-imagines Melbourne as a city emerging from the demands of its occupants. Supported by a new service-infrastructure, it questions the role of design, construction and what life is like in this, autopolis.
Welcome to: the City, on Demand.
This project investigated the emerging one-to-one service economies of the present and combines it with a city-wide intelligent smart city system which could theoretically learn and self-optimise. What developed was a city run by demand - where traditional notions of floors, space, and how we consume architecture is catered to the individual. Departing from the rigidity of repetition and isolated towers, architecture becomes a mediator of desire governed by consumption.
Autonomic was undertaken as an Masters of Architecture Thesis project at the University of Melbourne. It was later presented at the 2017 UABB Urbanism & Architecture Bi-City Biennale.
