In Eudoxia, which spreads both upward and down, with winding alleys, steps, dead ends, hovels, a carpet is preserved in which you can observe the city's true form.
- Italo Calvino, "Cities & The Sky 1", Invisible Cities
This fragmented blue city is a re-representation of the mythical city of Eudoxia from Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities, published in 1972. Originally realised as an isometric drawing by Ying Lee, a student in 1st year in the Bachelor of Design at the University of Melbourne, the drawing was re-scaled and re-engineered into this installation.
,,
This presented fragment of the eternal city recalls its troubled past and predicts its uncertain future by never settling into a moment of quiet. Instead, the floating gothic arches, pilasters and ground of stone provide a vision of Venice neither restrained and whole, nor entirely fluid and fractured.
The troubled composition encapsulates the image of the city and the ephemera of its population past and present, alongside the natural forces that confront it and remind us of the frailty of its existence.
